How do they put you to sleep for an endoscopy?
For a routine endoscopy, sedation is often given. There are many local variations about if, how, and when sedation is given. Some centers may normally provide only local anesthesia to the throat. Usually, sedation is given by intravenous injection in the examination room immediately before the test begins.
How do you breathe during an endoscopy?
The doctor will then pass the endoscope into the stomach. There is no pain at all. However, you will feel like retching, bloated and quite uncomfortable for the few minutes of the test. You should breathe through the nose and not attempt to talk during the test.

If you vomit, there is a small risk that the vomit could enter your lungs. (This is called aspiration.) If the test is done in an emergency, a tube may be inserted through your nose or mouth to empty your stomach. Do not take sucralfate (Carafate) or antacids on the day of the test.
